Producers of the Leite Rondônia project receive sanitary management services

The Instituto BioSistêmico (IBS) carried out the first health management services for dairy farms that are part of the Leite Rondônia project, in the Ji-Paraná region, in Rondônia, between May 16 and June 18.

Led by veterinarian and IBS consultant Edson Tavares, the services are focused on monitoring milk quality and herd health, as well as performing Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination (AITF).

In addition to the AITF, the consultant performed milk quality tests and provided sanitary  management guidance focused on herd health and good milking hygiene practices.

Among the challenges faced by producers regarding herd health, Edson highlights the high incidence of ticks and flies, cases of mastitis, as well as reports of reproductive problems such as frequent abortions and cows with difficulty getting pregnant.

“We recommend the use of fly control earrings and deworming the herd with safe products that, in addition to controlling worms, help control ticks without affecting the milk. We are also reinforcing the need to adopt reproductive vaccines against bovine leptospirosis, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) and campylobacteriosis,” explains the veterinarian.

To control mastitis, the IBS consultant has reinforced, among producers, the importance of performing the CMT (California Mastitis Test) to diagnose subclinical mastitis, in addition to preventive measures with good milking practices.

“To clean the cows’ mammary quarters, we recommend using chlorinated water, which helps eliminate some bacteria, in addition to using paper towels for drying. We recommend pre-dipping to eliminate a greater quantity of bacteria before milking. And, after the process, we recommend post-dipping to close and protect the teats, avoiding contamination by mastitis,” says the consultant.

About the Leite Rondônia Project

Conceived and implemented by the Instituto BioSistêmico, the Leite Rondônia project is supported by resources from the Zoetis Foundation. The initiative seeks to promote the development of dairy farming on a total of 100 properties, with a family farming profile, in the Ji-Paraná region, in the state of Rondônia, in the Amazon Biome.

It proposes a set of activities and technological assistance resources, structured and modulated in four thematic axes aimed at improving the production process: good practices, reproductive management, nutritional management and health management.

In addition to technical visits to each property, the project provides for training meetings. These include training focused on the sustainability of dairy farming in the Amazon Biome, highlighting topics that require greater attention on the properties, reinforcing the good practice measures to be implemented during the project.

The project uses the CheckMilk methodology, which has a platform with a management system and application for technical teams and producers. The system facilitates project management and the application assists the producer on a daily basis, as a support, an extension of IBS consultancy that can be accessed at any time in the palm of your hand.
